Why Personalising Your Online Accounting Software Package is Like Personalised Dog Name Tags

You have probably been intimidated by a dog, especially a big dog, but have you ever been intimidated by software? It wouldn’t be all that surprising if you had, because the user manuals on these things are thick, even if they are on a computer disc! The trick to getting your head around such packages however is to really think about how you are going to personalize it. And having thought about the question myself, I realized that it wasn’t so much of a different process than that of personalizing dog name tags, and why it’s such a great idea to make the effort!
1) When our dog was small, she looked quite similar to lots of other puppies in the area. Maybe they came from the same litter or something, I don’t know. She was still learning her name when we first started taking her to puppy parties to help her become socialized. We bought her a nice red collar, and personalized her name tag. Good job too: all the dogs looked the same but had different collars. We could have gone home with the wrong dog otherwise (remember that they didn’t know their names by this point). When you use online accounting software you can easily end up confused if you have many categories. But if you take the time to colour and name them correctly you should be ok.
2) At one time we had a dog who was forever escaping. Thankfully we were able to plug all the holes in our fence, but it wasn’t that easy when we went to my parents house for vacation. One year our dog escaped and got picked up by the local pound. They contacted us to say that they had him. When we turned up, we were asked for verification ID which we were able to show and which matched up with what was on our dogs name tag. When you want to find an old and perhaps lost receipt it can often be a nightmare tracking it down. However, if you make it a habit of clearly naming your purchases it’s easy with accounting software. Simply key in the date range you bought the goods, and what it was, and the software will tell you exactly what the details were. If you bought it on credit card it then becomes an easy matter to find the supporting materials.
3) Finally, you can get your dog tags personalized. This is great because you can choose a style that fits you and your dog. When it comes to online accounting software it’s worth changing the colours and fonts there too. This is because when you have a lot of account tabs open at the same time it can be a bit confusing knowing which one you are working on at any one time. However, if they are colour coded then you can choose just the red, or blue tab, flip over to the green tab, get the information you need and then back to red. For many people that might seem a bit silly, but for people like me with dyslexia that’s a huge help!
So what can we learn from dog tags? Choose categories so that you don’t confuse yourself and end up with a horrible mess. Clearly label your entries as you go and you will find it easier to match up things like old receipts. Personalize your accounts and use colour so that it is easier to work out what you are working on in any one sessions.
