Where to Position Your Dog Kennel

If you’re planning on putting a kennel for your dog outside, there are a few things that you should take into consideration when deciding on where to place the kennel. Aside from the obvious points, such as making sure that your dog can shelter from the rain, or from the sun, here are a few other pointers to consider:

Build it so that it is within view when looking out your door or window.  This is especially helpful when your dog is barking at something, and you need to see what is bothering it.

Don’t put it so far away that your dog never sees anyone. Dogs are social creatures, so place it where he can see you or other members of your family.

Keep away from lining fences where there is a sidewalk. Most dogs love to bark at strangers. To help your dog be good, don’t place him within easy eyesight of strangers walking down the street.

Make sure it’s within reach of water. You’ll need to clean the kennel and run and surrounding areas, so it’s best if you can hose it off easily.  By the same token, make sure the runoff water has a place to go, preferably not onto the street.

Once you’ve decided on where to put the kennel, take some time to clear the area and make sure there’s no dangerous items such as broken glass, old dead wood, nails or other potentially harmful material around.
