Wheat Intolerence – Is it Real?
Posted by GuestPoster in Health & Fitness
If a close friend or family member has just told you that they have wheat intolerance, you may be wondering what all the fuss is about. After all, it would seem that every where that you turn these days, people are talking about one food sensitivity or another. Are they really suffering or just being a fashionably fussy eater? The truth is that food intolerance is becoming more common due to several factors. While medical science does not all agree to this fact, a common theory is that the foods that we eat are too “clean” and our gastrointestinal systems lack many important good bacteria. Because of this, over time our bodies are unable to effectively deal with these foods.
Wheat intolerance is when you have a negative reaction to the wheat gluten protein. Typically, it can take a day or so after you consume gluten for symptoms to show up. In some people this can happen sooner and some people may take a couple of days prior to symptoms appearing. As with the time frame for onset, the symptoms will vary by patient. Some people experience gastrointestinal distress while others have skin issues such as hives and rashes. Depression and fatigue are also common symptoms.
When a person is wheat intolerant, they will need to stay away from any foods that contain wheat gluten. This can be challenging, because gluten is hidden in more than just baked goods. It is also found in places like ice cream at ketchup. This means that someone living gluten free has to avoid many foods, and must become an avid label reader. With the holidays approaching a great way to show your support is by purchasing them gluten free gift baskets. You can buy them with premade treats or you can pick one that has mixes that will allow them to make everything from cookies to pizza dough at home.
