What is Liposuction Surgery?

When it comes to cosmetic surgery today, one of the most popular surgical procedures is liposuction surgery.  We believe this is due to the phenomenal results that one can obtain by undergoing this procedure.  Therefore, since this procedure is becoming so popular, we are going to dedicate this section to the explaining how a typical liposuction surgery is performed.

The first thing that will happen is a prospective patient will contact a cosmetic surgeon for a consultation.  During this consultation, the cosmetic surgeon will provide an explanation of the realistic expectations of the surgery, as well as any potential complications that could arise from this procedure.  Additionally, the surgeon should cover the precautions he or she takes to minimize the likelihood of those complications occurring.

Now that we have mentioned the initial steps, let’s talk about the actual procedure itself.

During the procedure, a liposuction patient will be administered a local anesthetic to the area to be operated on.  At this point, the next step is based on the form of liposuction selected by the surgeon.

If the patient is having tumescent liposuction performed, the anesthetic used will cause the patient’s fat deposits to swell, making it significantly easier for the surgeon to remove the deposits via a medical device called a cannula.

On the other hand, if the cosmetic surgeon is performing ultrasonic liposuction, he or she will use pads that emit ultrasonic waves to liquefy the fat deposits.  At this point, the cosmetic surgeon will use the cannula (which is a little smaller than the one used in tumescent liposuction) to remove the fat deposits.
