What Is a Grout Sealer and How to Use It

A grout sealer is a relatively simple product that can be applied to the grout in order to keep other things from becoming absorbed by the grout. Dry grout is a lot like a sponge that is just waiting to absorb whatever falls on top of it. When you use a grout sealer, you are essentially sealing up all of the holes in the sponge so that it is no longer able to absorb anything else. As a matter fact, the first time you apply a grout sealer to your tile floors, you want to make sure to keep on applying several coats of the sealant until you get to the point where the grout sealer will just be on the surface and it won’t be able to be absorbed anymore. When this happens, you know that you have put on enough.
It is relatively easy to learn how to seal grout. The first thing that you need to do is to make sure that the grout is clean and dry. The next thing you want to do is to use either a brush or a bottle roller to apply the grout sealant to all of the grout lines. Try and be careful so that you do not get the sealer on the tile because it is not necessary. Using a bottle roller is probably the fastest way to apply a grout sealer. When you roll it on, you want it to stay wet for at least 10 min. This way you can ensure that you have enough sealant on to keep your grout sealed as possible. Most of the time, you’re going to want to use a water-based grout sealer. You need to make sure that you mark your calendar the day that you sealed your grout so that you won’t forget to do it again in 6 to 8 months. Sealing your grout is time-consuming, but it is less time-consuming than having to go back and clean your tile and grout every two weeks. If you seal your grout, you shouldn’t have to do very much grout cleaning for the next six months.
