We are now doing a countdown on the Top 10 Serious mistakes in a job interview. All of these are simple errors that lead to a bad interview. Over my days of Executive Recruiting I have coached with both entry level and director level potential employees and have been a part of some bad interviews. What contributes to bad job interviews?
Last article we discussed #10: Providing too Much Information
In this article we are going to talk about:
#9 Pretending to be knowledgeable in foreign areas
Occasionally we would like the job so bad that we have a go too hard to bend things in our direction by stretching the truth. Of course, the object of a job interview is to make an effort your best to apply your experience to the questions being asked. Yet, what can you do with questions well outside your scope of knowledge?
Do you have a go to fake it and expect you can get up to speed on the job?
Here is what you should do when the interviewer asks a question that is way beyond your reach…
Be Honest
In most cases, you would in fact be much-admired for your truthfulness. I had a job applicant once who when asked a tough question simply said:
“to be open, I do not have that type of know-how. I would be lying to convey to you that I did. So, instead of trying to create something up, I’m just going to declare that I don’t know.”
My candidate said that the hiring manager was in shock and said no one has ever been that transparent in an interviewer before.
Can you expect the same outcome? Probably not. Wouldn’t you rather depart with your uprightness? After all, the whole thing will come out in the wash anyway.
Here is what you need to consider: If you come across as someone who stretches the truth, it will always lead to a bad job interview.
In your next meeting let your honor shine and your candor show. Prefer to be truthful.
