What are Garden Lights?

Ask ten different people what a garden light is and you’ll probably get ten different answers. My wife bought a bunch of solar powered lights that we placed along the front walkway. They had been up for quite a while before I even heard them referred to as garden lights. Before that if I’d given it any thought I would probably have assumed that a garden light was something that could only be placed in an actual garden. It turns out I was wrong, because apparently that is the name given to just about any outdoor light that someone would put up around their home. I see them commonly placed along front sidewalks and stairs, by decks and patios, around trees and bushes, and yes, even around gardens. They have a fairly distinct look, too, with soft, muted colors that give illumination without being direct and harsh. The term may have originated with the lights people put around gardens, but today the term garden lights has a much wider meaning.
