Watch Out Radio Fans: Here Come The 90’s

Take it from someone who has made a living in radio broadcasting; the medium is about money. How successful a radio station is does NOT depend on the music it plays, how good the DJ’s are, or how many community events it supports. It relies solely on how well it can help drive customers to its client’s stores.
Because the retail spending money comes primarily from women between the age of thirty and forty, many radio stations do whatever they can to reach this group. Through a variety of scientific and traditional tactics, stations are named, formatted and put on the air all in search of credit card wielding women in their 30’s.
Because research tells us time and time again that women like to hear familiar music that makes them feel young, we play music from their high school years. About seven years ago someone realized you could build an entire radio station of the music from the 80’s. What does this mean today?
You guessed it, women in their thirties now were between the age of 14 and 20 in the 90’s. Just this week the first 90’s music radio station appeared in Sacramento replacing an Alternative Rock station. In the coming months and years don’t be surprised if your favorite station is replaced by the likes of the Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears and Will Smith. Are you ready to “get jiggy with it”?
