If you’re planning a babymoon, then there are a lot of questions that you probably have about travel during pregnancy.
The first thing to consider is the means of travel. Both car and air travel are very safe for pregnant women. If you are traveling by car, make sure that you wear your seat belt, and move your seat back away from the dashboard, so that your stomach is farther away from the airbag. In both car and air travel, keep your comfort in mind by packing lots of snacks and water, pillows, blankets, and layers of clothing. Also, make sure that you stand up frequently and walk around. Pregnant women are at greater risk for blood clots, so moving often is important.
Finding travel insurance during pregnancy is another hugely important factor in your trip. Did you know that you may not have medical coverage at your destination? Check with your current health care provider to find out the details about where you are and are not covered. You’ll need to make sure that you have some form of medical coverage during your trip, and you’ll want to have coverage that will include pregnancy-related complications. Many travel insurance providers will exclude pregnancy from their normal policies. Look carefully at the details, and keep in mind that there are a number of specialized travel insurance plans out there that cater to the specific needs of pregnant women.
Even if you already have medical coverage at your destination, you will probably be spending a lot of money on your tickets and reservations. But complications of your pregnancy could arise even before you start traveling that would force you to cancel your trip. If you do have to cancel, will you lose all of the money that you’ve spent on the trip? You don’t have to if you purchase trip cancellation insurance. Just make sure that you will be reimbursed if you cancel your trip for a pregnancy-related reason.
Travel during pregnancy can be very safe and enjoyable. Just make sure that you are well-prepared!
