Traditional Dumbbells vs. Adjustable
Posted by GuestPoster in Health & Fitness
In the past there was only really one option for dumbbells – free weights. Though these style of weights are still available on the market, there are now adjustable dumbbells offered as well. There are still many weightlifters who prefer the free weight style. Though there are many companies that produce free weights of the traditional variety, there are more and more companies moving to the adjustable style these days.
One of the biggest reasons for the shift is that free weights take up a great deal of space within the home and also require weightlifters to stop in the middle of their routine in order to adjust weight requirements for particular workouts. While the free weight style are still produced in large quantities, the adjustable models are quickly becoming the standard among serious weightlifters. The primary reason is because of the versatility and convenient storage of these models.
As a single set can be adjusted to provide anywhere between 5 and 90 pounds of weight these dumbbells can be stored in a fraction of the space necessary for a full set of more traditional free weights. No longer must you dedicate a significant portion of your home to weightlifting equipment. Now you can easily store your weights under your bed or in a closet without limiting your ability to get a full-range weightlifting workout.
Although the adjustable style of weights make storage and uninterrupted workouts easier, they are somewhat pricy. You should expect to pay anywhere between a couple hundred and one thousand dollars for a good set with a full weight range. Sets that provide 5 to 90 pounds of weight will cost the most. Those that top out at 25 or 50 pounds are less expensive.
Comparatively speaking adjustable weights are not significantly more expensive than those of the traditional variety. Traditional free weight sets often cost several hundred dollars. But consider the added benefits. For just a bit more you can have the added benefit of uninterrupted workouts. You also get practical, compact storage of your weights, with a single set of handheld weights taking up less than one square foot within your home.
