Tips for Cleaning Garage Floor Stains

The floor of a garage is probably subject to more abuse than any other regularly used surface in a home.  Automotive fluids, laundry surfactants, chemical lawn care fertilizers, paints, and other materials can discolor and quickly mar a garage floor.  There are some simple ways to deal with stains on a garage floor that can often be done with existing household products.

One of the most popular garage flooring choices is concrete, usually of a rough finish.  It is highly absorbent and subject to ready staining.  The first safety measure is simple caution.  Watch how liquids are handled.  If nothing is spilled you don’t have to worry about cleaning up a set-in stain later.  Many people have a slop sink in the garage, and it is there they mix liquid fertilizers or perhaps presoak laundry with bleach, or fill their mop buckets.  All of the liquids used in cleaning can stain concrete.

A few simple household tricks can remove most of a stain causing agent before it sets in.  For routine stains, simply soak the area thoroughly with a garden hose and then liberally sprinkle a scouring powder (such as Comet® or Ajax®) onto the affected area.  This will make a mildly abrasive paste that can then be scrubbed with a stiff-bristled brush and hosed off.

For oil and other greasy stains, cat litter is a good absorbent.  Sprinkle a layer over the area and allow it to sit for about 20 or 30 minutes, and then sweep it away. This will not remove the discoloration but it will reduce the surface oil that can cause someone to slip and fall.  Another similar method, though a bit more involved and more thorough, is to apply a thin dusting of Portland cement to the affected area and soak it with a solvent (such as Lysol®). Cover the treated area with a piece of plastic sheeting, and allow it to sit overnight.  The next day simply sweep away the powdered material.
