The Fountain Pen Remains The Best Writer

The introduction of the fountain pen was a tremendous improvement on the pens that people used in the past. It was a vastly more convenient writing instrument to use because it carried its own ink supply as opposed to the dip pens that required the nib of the pen to be dipped into an ink supply after writing only a few words. The fountain pen gave writers the opportunity of writing for hours at a time before the ink reservoir had to be refilled.
During the early years the fountain pen was very popular and pen companies were busy bringing out new models and using materials to make sure their pens lasted longer and were more reliable. The early models such as the Parker Duofold fountain pen were constructed of hardened rubber before the introduction of celluloid to give them a far tougher exterior. This new barrel material also meant that the pens could be made in a far greater range of colors and designs.
The area where the real competition between pen companies lay was in the filling method. It was very important to create the fountain pen that was the simplest to use and refilling it with ink represented a sticking point with a lot of people. Companies came up with all types of inventions to make it as easy as possible to refill the pen.
There were button fillers, piston fillers, snorkel fillers, aeromatic, vacumatic, lever fillers and the Sheaffer Touchdown filler. These days the more convenient cartridge and converter filling systems are usually employed although pens are still produced using the piston filling system.
The ballpoint pen largely replaced the fountain pen due to the convenience and cost of each. However, there are still many types of fountain pens available that are very reasonably priced and provide you with a smooth writing instrument. A good example of this is the Waterman Phileas fountain pen.
They have largely gone out of fashion but there is still a strong industry surrounding the fountain pen. Collectors and people who love to write continue to buy and enjoy their fountain pens.
