When looking for items to use in creating a window treatment you will find products that are made to be used with different types of curtain rods. The most common style of curtain panel is the pocket style. This fabric piece will have a pocket sewn into the top section that is used for placing the panel onto the rod. In this instance the type of rod used will be a pocket rod. The basic design of this item uses a type of metal in creating the product. Most designs have two pieces of metal interconnected in a way that allows them to slide in and out from the center. This makes them expandable rods so that they will fit several sizes of window frames.

Another type of rod often used in creating formal window treatments, like raw silk curtains, is the hook style. This product comes with tiny hook openings placed along the top that are designed to hold that hooks used with pinch pleat draperies. This item will come with an attached cord that hangs down one side. The cord draws the hooked panels apart when you pull on it to open your drapes. These particular type of rods are available in several different materials including wood, metal and plastic.

The curtain rod used for pocket panels is usually made as a plain piece while the type used for pinch pleat drapes is usually more decorative in design. This is because the pocket styles are not generally as visible as the hook styles are. These formal rods will often have decorative carvings along the length of the pole as well as ornate finials at the ends. These rods are available in assorted colors and with different types of finishes that can give them a special look such as in the antique styles. A basic pocket rod is usually available in white.
