The Amateur Plumber’s Guide to Bending Brass Pipes

Posted by in -Home Improvement

Brass pipes are used for establishing plumbing lines in a home.  By bending brass pipe, you can eliminate the need to use 45- and 90 degree fittings.  According to experts from plumbing company Houston TX, there are two main procedures for bending brass pipes: you can simply use a pipe bender, or use heat from a torch to soften the metal so that it can be manipulated.  While bending brass pipe through any of these methods is relatively uncomplicated, care must be taken to prevent injury to one’s self.  In this post by experts from plumbing company Dallas TX, we teach you how you can bend brass pipes.

If you have a pipe bender available, you can use it to bend your brass pipe into the required angle, as long as it is the appropriate size for the pipe diameter that you need.  Simply insert the pipe and position it so that the desired area to be bended is in the slot.  Then bend the pipe by pulling the pipe bender arm down.

Without a pipe bender, you will need to use heat from a blow torch.  Wear protective goggles and make sure to wear work gloves that can protect you from high temperatures.

Light the torch up and adjust the length of the flame to two inches.  Concentrate the tip of the flame all over the desired bend area.  Allow this pipe section to turn a dull red.

Use some wet rags to cool the ends of the brass pipe, as this is where you will be handling the brass pipe.  Insert the brass pipe into a bending spring to prevent it from kinking, or you can just pour sand inside the pipe.  Do this carefully, since the heated brass can be very dangerous.

Bend the pipe to the necessary angle by anchoring it around the bending form.  You can use a large tree, a metal garbage can, or even a hot water tank for this purpose.  This should have been prepared before you have heated up the brass pipe.  Bend the pipe slowly, avoiding sharp bends.  Once the desired angle has been achieved, remove it from the bending spring and let it cool before installing.
