Solar Lighting can Improve Outdoor Safety

Posted by in -Home Improvement

People with pets and small children are finding that solar lights can offer a certain amount of protection, especially among the curious as they try to see what is inside the small decorations sticking up from the ground. Animals especially, may take their curiosity a step too far and bite into the wire powering the yard lights.

Young children are known to be curious about how things work and taking apart a traditional light can be a shocking experience for them. Plus, that wire buried under the ground can get in the way if you have to plant anything along its path. While the power running to most outdoor decorative lights is only 12-volt direct current, it could be unsettling for a small animal or young child.

Then there’s the power transformer that traditional yard lights need to supply the 12-volts of direct current that operate the lights. Typically, they were installed in the garage or another outside shed, if the house was so equipped, but occasionally had to be connected in the basement. This provided one more place for curious young kids to put their fingers to see how things work.

Changing bulbs and batteries in solar deck lighting and garden lights is similar to changing the same items in a flashlight. Although each manufacturer makes them a little different, they all work basically the same and they will provide directions on the easiest way to switch out burned out bulbs or batteries that no longer hold their charge. Lamps that use LEDs, such as patio umbrella lights and rope lights will not ever need to have components replaced – if they stop working it is most likely another issue.

There are some models of solar lights that can provide good illumination and they can be useful especially in remote areas of the yard. No wires to run and trenches to dig. Just fasten the light where it is needed, make sure the solar panel is aimed at the sun, and the installation is complete. No fuss, no muss and no worries about your pets or kids getting shocked.
