Should You Buy Hypoallergenic Dog Food?

Posted by in Pets Galore

If you find that your pet is suffering from allergies you naturally want to provide the best care for him or her. If your dog is showing the classic signs of food sensitivity; gastrointestinal distress, skin irritations, and extra licking, you are probably wondering if you should invest in a hypoallergenic dog food.

No matter what, you should strive to provide your pet with the highest quality pet food possible. The greatest part is that the premium stuff doesn’t cost a heck of a lot more than the regular stuff. This could come as a shock to some of you, but unless you go to a holistic vet, you are probably feeding your dog low quality food, and you don’t even realize it. Popular brands such as Iams, Purina, and ScienceDiet are all equivalent to junk food. They use chemicals, preservatives which many dogs are sensitive to and can be high in grains (another typical irritant). Moreover, they use low quality protein sources (if you see any animal “by-product” on the label, definitely think twice!)

If your currently buying one of these brands, first try a high-quality dog food before switching to a special diet. Getting rid of the chemicals and other additives might be enough to get rid of your dogs problems. One brand I wholeheartedly recommend is Blue Buffalo dog food. Their food is chemical free, and uses high quality protein sources, while avoiding common ingredients that can irritate our pets. Make sure to make the transition to the new food as slow as possible, increasing the ratio until they are on the new food over a one month period. If they don’t improve start looking into more strict diets.

It can be hard to pinpoint the source of your dogs allergies, but rest assured, your dog loves you no matter what.
