Should You Buy A Pearl Snare?

Pearl are well known and well respected for their manufacturer of percussion instruments, with their Pearl snare being one of the best known.
A snare drum is made a little differently than other types of drum. With this drum, small snares are stretched across the bottom of the drumhead. They are made from a variety of materials, including metal cable, wire, plastic and animal gut.
The first snare drum was invented around 200 years ago, and originally used by drummers in an orchestra. Because of the snares at the base of the drumhead, the drum produces a unique rattling noise when it is beat.
Sometimes you will hear this drum referred to as a side drum. This is because of its usual placement when used together with other drums and cymbals–it is placed to the side. The snare drum is usually made from laminated wood strips though some, particularly those that need to be transported a lot, can be made from metal.
The snare drum is played in a fairly unique way. Drummers can tap either the side, the head or the shell with a drumstick or a brush. It is best to work on your technique before you play in front of an audience as the very distinctive sounds produced do tend to travel quite far, thus any mistakes are easily noticed. In fact, it is this ability whereby sound travels a long way that has made it the perfect choice of military drum. Messages to troops can be carried a long distance by this drum beat, and it was often used to notify soldiers when it was time to get up, go to eat or retire at night.
There are nine categories of Pearl Snare, with each category being made in a slightly different way. Each category is named after a famous drummer. Currently you will find over 34 types of Pearl Snare sold. Some are made from wood, others from metal. While it may sound different from a Yamaha DTxplorer, it has a charm of its own.
