Portable air conditioning has evolved from opening the windows and turning on the fan to highly sophisticated and automated units. When portable AC first came on the market, they were inefficient, energy-goblins that had to be manually turned on and off. Now models have programmable thermostats with timers built in so they operate only when needed. How does this equate to saving money? Automation of units allows units to be fine tuned so that they never operate when not needed. This means no money wasted. Not to mention the fact that portable units only cost a fraction of purchasing and installing central air conditioning. Installing a central unit can cost you thousands of dollars, and thousands of dollars more in custom duct work has to be done for the vents.
