There are many things that veterinary technicians are in charge of at work. While it is obvious that you will assist the veterinarian while they perform laboratory or clinical work, you will also have a number of obligations that you are completely responsible for. The average vet tech program lasts between two and four years and the salary is very nice as well. The average veterinary tech salary is around 29k and comes with a number of benefits depending on who the employer is. Before you just into this career and begin training, it is important to consider the different duties you will be responsible for. It is rather self explanatory that you will need to work alongside the veterinarian, assisting in any procedures they are doing. There are a number of things you will be completely in charge of as well.
One of the most important duties that you will have as a veterinary tech is treating and diagnosing medical conditions. You will typically be working with the patient and their owner, administering medications, and recording any information. Some simple procedures you will be helping with is birthing, spaying/neutering, and euthanizing seriously injured or ill animals. These are all things that require schooling, whether it is a simple two year program or four years. Most programs can be found in community colleges, but you can also opt for vocational schools and so forth. Your veterinary tech salary can range anywhere from 23k to 24k, even going up to 40.5k for the top ten percentile. This is great news for somebody interested in careers within the animal care field. With all of the different duties you are responsible for; it is helpful to attend one of the many vet tech schools available for a prolonged period and getting all of the skills and experience needed for you to be confident working.
