Replacing A Damaged Cord: Not A Daunting Task

You had maintained a balance in the room by placing two table lamps for bedroom, one on each side of the bed. Now after months of usage you see that the cord of one of the contemporary table lamps is damaged. You do not want to depart with your favorite lamp and spoil the décor of your room. No problem! You need not buy a new one, what you need to do is just replace the old cord with a new cord.
Usually lamps use a standard socket connected to a plug and a cord which is about 6 feet long. Let’s see today how you can replace a cord yourself.
- First and foremost unplug the lamp.
- Take away the lamp shade, and then take out the harp and the bulb.
- Now its time to remove the socket shell from its base. Do this by pressing or squeezing as required. Raise the socket; you can see the wires now.
- Slightly unscrew the screws holding the wires so that you can take out the socket.
- Measure from the base of the lamp body about one foot of the old cord and cut the rest. Join the end of the new cord to it with the help of an electric tape.
- Now out of the top of the lamp slowly and steadily draw the old cord. This will automatically result in the new cord replacing the old one.
- Pull out two inches of the new cord and split it vertically so that the wires separate.
- Create a knot with the cord this will keep it at place near the screws. To do this you will create a loop on each wire and then pass one over the other and tighten it.
- Take each wire and remove nearly one inch of insulation.
- Next wind the strands together.
- Form a ‘U’with the end of each wire. While tightening check whether the wire is drawn around the screw.
- Attach the wire with the smooth insulation to the terminal which is copper colored. Connect the neutral wire to the silver colored terminal.
- Slide the socket shell back into the base.
- Fix the bulb.
- Wind up by replacing the harp and the shade.
