Practical Makeup Storage Tips

For many women, the question of what to do with all their makeup is a serious one. We tend to collect makeup-different shades of lipstick, eyeliner, shadows and blushes and foundations…pretty soon, what started out as a well organized make up box becomes an overwhelming mess. While throwing it all out and starting over might be an option for some, most of us simply need a better way to manage the makeup we’ve already got. Here are a few ideas to control the clutter and make the most of your makeup collection
First, weed out any makeup that is past it’s prime. That includes dried up nail polishes, mascara that is older than three months, lipsticks that have aquired a strange texture or smell, and any other out-of-date cosmetics. If you’ve had a particular shade of eyeshadow in your makeup box for a year and you’ve never worn it, chances are that you never will, so throw it away. Outdated cosmetics can cause skin and eye infections, so if you aren’t sure of the age of an item, err on the side of caution and get rid of it.
Once you’ve culled your collection, sort it. There are two good ways to do this. The first is to group like items with like-lipsticks in one pile, shadows in another, and so on. Another option is to sort by use if you usually use the same colors together to create a certain look, go ahead and sort your makeup into different “face wardrobes.” This will save you time when you’re rushing to put together a coordinated look five minutes before you run out the door.
Finally, you will need some makeup storage ideas. Some fun options include keeping different “wardrobes” in cute decorative boxes, stacked neatly on a bathroom shelf or dresser fold-out makeup boxes that hold everything together in one place, or even putting your makeup on display. For example, eyeliner pencils can be arranged in a small vase with a single fake flower as a cute accent on a vanity, and pretty lipstick cases look great lined up in front of a lighted mirror. Brushes and applicators can be loosely piled in clear containers tied with a ribbon for a touch of old Hollywood glamour. Get creative, and you’ll find there are hundreds of ways to store your cosmetics without resorting to keeping everything in a messy drawer.
