Popularity: Looks, Personality or Something Else

Being somewhat of a dork, I always wondered what it is that makes people popular. Why do some people always seem to have a crowd gathered around them and others seem destined to live out life alone? Is it strictly social skills and looks?
I think both of those things have a role to play… social skills and looks are both important certainly. Everyone (whether we admit it or not) likes to be around beauty, and nobody likes to be around someone who is obnoxious. But, that being said I know people (like my awesome husband) who are average looking and have decent personalities, AND who are very popular. Why is that?
I think part of it is because people who are popular (at least as adults) make other people feel like they can conquer the world. My husband is like this. He just believes in people in a very quiet type of way and everyone he meets loves him.
After doing a bunch of research on this topic, I still think there is something else. I am beginning to believe that pheromones can actually play a role in how people perceive you and how popular you are. This seems to be particularly true of a pheromone called Androstenol. This pheromone is one that encourages other people to open up and chat with you.
From what I’ve read it works well with both people you know and people that are new to you. I’ve heard it works very well if you are in a sales position as it allows you to bypass a customers defenses. Interesting stuff.
Of course, I don’t think anything can replace a great personality and good grooming, but it is interesting to think that a pheromone may help you become more popular. I am seriously thinking about trying it out.
