Rice cookers come in a variety of shapes, sizes and prices. Prices for these machines vary considerably. The cheapest one that you can get costs less than $20. While the most expensive model sold in America at the moment costs over $400. As you can see for yourself, this is a huge price differential. So are the expensive machines really twenty times better than the cheap ones. In some ways, the answer is yes, and others, no. It really depends on your viewpoint.
The cheapest rice cookers are just simple electrical cookers. This means that there is no real temperature control. They are simply either on or off. This can cause the machine to boil over sometimes therefore with this style of appliance you really have to be in your kitchen to watch over the cooking process. This is why I prefer more expensive models like the Zojirushi NS-ZCC10 which is a Micom rice cooker. This technology is much more sophisticated and obviously costs more too. This is the trade off. For me it is worth it though. With a Micom device you can just turn it on and you know that the machine will take care of the cooking process leaving you free to do whatever you want.
So it is my opinion that you should try and get your hands on a Micom rice cooker if you can. They do cost more than the cheapest machines but they are much higher quality. Not only do they make rice that tastes better but they are also much easier to use and do not require constant supervision. This is why spending a little bit more money means you can save lots more time.
