Painting a Cast Iron Radiator

Posted by in -Home Improvement

If you’re looking for a good summer project, then painting your cast iron radiator could be the answer. It takes a little bit of effort, but through hard work you could really transform the look and feel of your home. In addition, painting a radiator with metallic based paint can reduce the heat output by as much as twenty percent. To paint your radiator, follow these basic steps:

1) Determine whether you want to remove the old paint or just cover it.
2) Clean off the surface thoroughly.
3) Cover the entire surface with a zinc or zinc chromate primer. This will ensure that your new paint will stick around for awhile.
4) Brush on an oil based paint – make sure to get all of the nooks and crannies.
5) Wait until the paint dries and then open all the windows and let it run.

After a while the new paint smell will fade and you’ll have a beautiful looking radiator to brighten your room.
