Vitamin b12 deficiency symptoms are not easy to ignore. Depending on the severity, they can cause minimal to maximum discomfort. Regardless of being mild to strong though, these symptoms are often alarming and distressing. Patients with this deficiency can either experience mild symptoms like headaches, loss of appetite, and nausea. But they could also experience numbness of hands and feet, shortness of breath, tingling skin, dementia and yellowing of the skin. These latter symptoms are very unnatural and uncommon that patients will surely take notice. They will be sufficiently bothered to say the least. Thus, they can not afford to forgo treatment because it can really disrupt their day to day lives.
The options for vitamin b12 deficiency treatment include oral supplements in pill form, sublingual in strip and liquid form, nasal sprays, and vitamin B12 injections. Injections are the longest used and the most traditional of the given options. These injections are also called cobalamin or cyanocobalamin injections. They are administered subcutaneously (under the skin) or intramuscularly (directly inside the muscles) so they may be quite painful for the patient. However, the biggest advantage of this injection is it can show successful results in two to four days, in 48 to 72 hours. This is because the vitamin gets to be injected directly into the bloodstream making it ready for easy absorption into the body. Six to seven vitamin injection treatments will usually be given every two to four days for a recovering patient. After this round, the physician may decide to continue the injections every month or every few months. At this point, he may also decide to have the patient take oral supplements for maintenance instead of the monthly injections. A thing to consider also is that these injections may have side effects. For some patients the side effects can be very mild. It can include an upset stomach, headache, and a swollen feeling. For some it can be more severe. It may cause them to have difficulty in breathing, heart palpitations, and pain.
