Mattress Off Gassing

Posted by in Health & Fitness

This is a problem not only for those people who suffer with allergies, chemical sensitivities or those with weaker immune systems.  This problem goes much deeper and it is really just beneath the surface of your mattress.  Now, you may be more up to speed on the latest advancements or breakthroughs in natural bedding and organic mattresses and don’t need to concern yourself so much with this problem.  But, there are other people just learning about this issue and are finding it a bit scary – and rightfully so.

How Can You Protect Yourself From Your Toxic Mattress?

Well, the best way is to do the right homework before you go out and buy one off the showroom floor so to speak.  Actually, in an ironic twist, getting the one off the showroom floor may be the best thing you can do!  You see, most new beds are sprayed with chemicals or have toxic agents used during their manufacturing or production.  There are some traditional mattress companies that are becoming more aware and cognizant of the marketplace’s intolerance to this and are changing their products.  Also, some types of futon mattress beds are offered in a more natural material and free from toxic agents.

One final way you can protect yourself if you find that you are stuck with a mattress that has this type of off gassing problem is to seal it in.  Just like you might seal in a food item with a zipper lock bag or put a sweater in an air tight bag for protection, you can do the same with your mattress.  Placing a bag that is made for the purpose of protecting your mattress – hence, the name, mattress cover -  made from special more inert plastics can do the job – it is a polyethylene material.  Basically, what it does is keep the gasses inside the bag and outside your lungs.
