Is Sewing a Cable Knit Sweater Challenging?

Posted by in Hobbies and Crafts

Sewing a cable knit sweater can be a challenge to most people. Knit fabrics are different from woven fabrics in terms of how they are made. Even if the knit fabrics are made from the same fibers used for woven fabrics, their structure allows them to stretch out. Handling this type of fabric is the challenge a beginner will tackle.

When sewing a cable knit sweater, the seams must be stretchable to match the fabric. It is common for people to experience of having the stitches break on a finished sweater because the fabric used makes the seam to stretch and the seam does not possesses the flexibility needed, so the threads break. This thread breaking can be prevented by using different stitches available on cheap sewing machines for beginners. Therefore, it is crucial to learn about these different stitches that a beginner can use to prevent thread breaking.

There are three basic stitches a beginner can use for sewing a cable knit sweater that will not have thread breaking. First is the zigzag stitch. Set the machine to zigzag and sew with a narrow width stitch. This will allow enough stretch in the seam. Next is the stretch stitch, which is available in almost all sewing machines. This type of stitch is made by the sewing machine by creating two stitches forward and a single stitch backward. The third stretch stitch selection is a tricot stitch. This type of stitch has the most amount of stretches needed for sewing knit sweaters.

Another challenge for sewing a cable knit sweater is the skipping of stitches and creation of holes in the knit fabric while sewing. In order to avoid this, the correct sewing machine needle should be used. The ball-point needles are the appropriate needles for sewing knits. These needles let the fibers to go to the side of the needle and not penetrate the fabric as ordinary needle does.  If you are able to tackle all these concerns, you may very well enjoy sewing your own sweater.
