Improving Your Coffee with What You Already Have

Given the option between coffee you like and coffee you don’t like, you’re probably going to choose coffee you like.  However, people tend to assume that drinking coffee you like is going to cost money for new expensive brewing gadgets or take a bunch of time learning methods that are complicated or messy.  That doesn’t have to be true.  Here are some basic tips on how to make coffee in a coffee maker that will improve the flavor of your coffee without reducing the contents of your wallet.

  • Before you start brewing coffee, try rinsing out your filter with cold water.  Doing this will rinse the filter of any papery residue it might contain (that will leave your coffee tasting bitter) and will help facilitate the extraction of the coffee flavor.  The subtle nuances of the coffee bean have an easier time seeping through a filter that has been rinsed prior to brewing.
  • Use cold (filtered) water if you can.  If you don’t have any water filtration cold tap water will suffice – but the point is to avoid room temperature water which tends to result in a pretty under extracted cup of coffee.  The cold water will make the brewing process last slightly longer, which gives the coffee maker more time to slow brew the coffee – thus creating a much more flavorful end result.
  • When the coffee is finished brewing move it from the pot into a thermos.  If the coffee stays on the burner for even ten or fifteen minutes it begins to burn, creating a chemical reaction that will harm the flavor of the coffee drastically.  By putting it into a thermos it will stay hot for hours without getting burned and losing its flavor.

If you just follow these three ‘best practices’ without investing in any new equipment you will have a much more flavorful cup of coffee.  If you have any questions you can visit my blog at www.vvlgar.com for more information on making great coffee at home.
