Improving Home and Office Air Quality through Air Duct Cleaning

A professional cleaning of our HVAC ducts is probably something that rarely crosses most of our minds. For the average person that is not an expert on how heating and cooling ducts work, cleaning ducts can be more of a project than a chore.

Many people with allergies claim that regular air duct cleaning provides relief and allergies lessen in both frequency and strength. My friend’s family, in which all members suffer with allergies, reported immediate relief after their HVAC vents were professionally cleaned.

In commercial environments, the air delivery system of a building can be a major contributor to Sick Building Syndrome. If not cleaned properly, dirty ducts can be very noticeable.

Airborne contaminants are pulled into air ducts every time the heating and cooling system runs and over time, those contaminants build up.  This build-up is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, fungi, and mold.

With that said, there are many qualified, certified and trained professional who use proprietary techniques to clean heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.  Cleaning ducts not only provides exceptional indoor air quality, but also allows HVAC systems to perform at their peak efficiency.

In many situations, those who have their heating and air conditioning vents cleaned save money due to higher efficiency levels for their AC unit. With better airflow, it only makes sense that you would use your air conditioner less in the summer and your heater less in the winter which in-turn extends the life of your high priced appliances.

While many companies recommend that your heating, ventilation and air conditioning ducts should be cleaned every 2-3 years, cleaning air ducts should be a planned part of every property restoration.  In humid places like Hawaii, especially  after fire damage or mold removal in Honolulu, professional air duct cleaning is essential in making sure harmful toxins do not spread all over your home.

Regular changing and replacing of heating filters will help keep your air ducts cleaner and your home safe.  But, if there is dust on the table, there must be dust in the vents that has made it past air-purifying filters.

Though the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) suggests that cleaning air ducts is not necessary, there are thousands of companies and agencies that would disagree. In most cases, not having your air ducts cleaned may not pose any dangerous harms, but a noticeable difference in air quality is immediately noticed once a professional cleaning occurs.

When selecting a professional heating, ventilation and air conditioning cleaning specialist, make sure that they are certified and in accordance with NADCA standards. The NADCA is the National Air Duct Cleaners Association.

In order to be a member of the NADCA, a company must meet stringent requirements such as maintain $500,000 in general liability insurance, agree to NADCA’s Code of Ethics, and have at least one NADCA certified Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS) on staff.  These strict requirements are sure to provide confidence when paying to have your air ducts professional cleaning and insure that if something does go wrong, the company is covered with enough insurance to place all of your valuable residential or commercial appliances.

While proper cleaning can increase efficiency of heating and air conditioning units, an untrained worker can cause serious damage to both of these appliances. At $4,000 minimum for an air conditioner, it is worth spending some time making sure that your “professional” air duct cleaner is actually professional.

While dust in your vents can cause allergies and other unwanted symptoms, moisture in your vents can cause serious problems with your family’s health and pose a threat to your appliances. If you’ve had a flood lately it is important to understand that water damage in your home or office is the main root for dangerous moisture entering your vents.

Most of the homes built today have air ducts that are in tight places between your floors or your attic that are very hard for people to get to. With that said, there are some things that can easily fit in these ducts: rodents.

While many people don’t like to think about it, it would not be a rare occurrence for a cleaning specialist to find multiple dead carcasses trapped within your damaged air ducts.  Your allergies might be due to constant inhaling of unwanted creatures within your circulation vents.

Overall, if you have lived in your house for a while and discovered that you have allergies since moving in, getting your air ducts professional cleaned is probably a wise investment. Honestly, you’ll know the difference immediately.
