Improve Your Health: The Electric Vegetable Steamer

Posted by in Food & Drink

Vegetables add a delicious, nutrition-packed boost to any healthy diet. There are numerous vegetables available to include in any menu. Vegetables can be cooked almost any way you like with a delicious outcome. They can be fried, boiled, steamed, baked, grilled, micro waved, and eaten raw. And, of course, they can be incorporated into recipes and juiced. The best juicer for vegetables is a masticating juicer. A juice maker with a centrifugal mechanism churns the vegetables too fast and will not extract all of the goodness from firm vegetables like a masticating juicer can.

For a health-conscious vegetable eater, there is really no tastier way of preparing vegetables than steaming the vegetables. This cooking method allows the vegetables to literally be steamed in their natural form in a steamer, either on the stove top or in a modern electric steamer. Either method allows the cook to control how ‘done’ the vegetables ‘get’’how cooked they become, and how crunchy or soft the vegetables are after cooking.

An advantage to steaming vegetables is that the vegetables remain relatively in their natural state, with their skin on the vegetables. Many of the vitamins within the vegetables are contained just below the skin and are preserved and eaten along with the skin when the skin is left on the vegetables, as it often is when the vegetables are steamed.

When vegetables are gently steamed, they retain some of their crunchy attributes. Many people prefer their vegetables cooked in that manner; others like to enjoy vegetables in a softer form. Steaming a vegetable until it is soft takes much longer than preparing it other ways; the virtue of the steaming method is that it avoids the use of high-calorie ingredients as the vegetables cook.

Using a home kitchen steamer to cook your vegetables enables the vegetables to cook in a healthful, low-calorie way. The steamed vegetables contribute to good health both in the nutrients they contain, and in the dietary fiber they possess which contributes to colon health. Steamed vegetables add a rich, nutritious touch to any meal or snack!
