One thing that you might want consider is going with a monochromatic color palette. This takes away a lot of the stress of having to mix and match a lot of different colors together. It also really allows you to focus in on architectural details or oversized furniture pieces so that the places where you spend your money really do get noticed.
You don’t have to just stick with the basic blue or pink color palettes you can even use neutrals the way you would with kitchen curtains or counter height dining sets. For instance it could be totally white. This allows you to use a lot of the furniture that you may already have even if it’s a dresser. Of course you will need to make sure that it’s safe for use around kids.
Another option would be just to go for more of a shabby chic look. The shabby chic kind of design style is something that’s very popular for adult spaces. It can have subtle touches or you could even just keep it all white. In fact you could even just use a lot of very ornate moldings. This can be a lot more sophisticated than a basic wallpaper border and is something that can really grow with your child and also be appropriate years down the road.
