Living in apartment place with a roommate can be in a way like taking on another life. You probably never lived in another place for that long and more so with total strangers. It can be quite scary. Aside from being so far away from your parents and friends and studying in a big university, the idea of living day in and day out with some people you hardly know is indeed overwhelming.

If you want to strike friendship with your new roommates, try some of these tips to foster a good atmosphere with your house buddies. If you have not met your roommate yet, try looking them up in some social networking sites like Facebook or Twitter. By simply knowing some basic information about them you may get some idea what kind of person she is. Send a friend request or email a message introducing your self. Even if you are still some distance apart you may learn what she is into. You can bring a small gift once you get together. This is a good ice breaker.

Your room would most probably be still bare, get her to plan with you what both of you could bring in. It would not be a good idea to bring your bike if your room is very small as it would take up so much space. If you need some things you can also split on a budget and buy that item that both of you can use. You can start arranging the room as both of you want. The general rule is give-and-take. It is good to give in some things but it is bad if she is always taking advantage of things. Be firm of what you also want.

Give time and sit down to make house rules. These rules written in black and white are very important to set standards for both of you. There may be times when one would like to do some things that are not okay with you. Refer to the house rule and check if a violation is going to be committed. Some universities like the Bringham Young University’s BYU Housing have its own policies included in its Honor Code that tackles everything from dress code, separation of male and female, visiting hours and conduct.

One of the most important things about living with a roommate is respecting her rights to privacy. If you gain her respect, you may be already living with your future best friend in an ideal BYU Housing.
