Besides the basics, the first step to becoming a florist involves acquiring the basic knowledge of taking care of cut flowers. Basic floral knowledge can be acquired from attending courses offered by qualified florists, reading books on the subject or researching from the internet. One should then seek to practice the theory learnt. As such, one should practice at home or seek an internship in an already established florist shop. Knowledge about the artistic resources needed to make the floral arrangements is also vital. Such include ribbons, foils, tissues, cellophane, driftwood, vases or other flower holders.
A florist needs to have good interpersonal and communication skills. This is because he/she will be dealing with different clients on a daily basis. The florist will need to be an approachable person, with a pleasant personality in order to attract more clients. Managerial skills are also vital for every person seeking to become a florist. This is because he or she will be required to take flower orders, take stock, manage the inventory, stipulate the bills and account for the income or expenditure in a flower shop.
To qualify as a florist, one will need to start working in a flower shop. This can be either at one’s own flower shop or as an employee or intern in an already established flower shop. One can also work as a freelance florist, in which case he or she would need to get flower arranging contacts from hotels, restaurants or established floral shops.
