Horseneck and the Birds

Posted by in -The Great Outdoors

Coastal birds that need shoreline breeding habitat are in trouble in many areas, including places around Horseneck Beach MA. Shoreline habitats have been lost and converted to human use at an alarming rate. We just love to live at the beach (me included!).

When I was in Horseneck this summer there were areas that were roped off and set aside as off limits to park visitors. The reason was to not disturb the birds that were nesting along the back of the beach and in among the dunes. I have learned that one of the biggest problems with this type of arrangement, and this set up has apparently become common along many New England beaches, is not with people. It is with dogs. There are enough people that do pay attention to the signs and those that do probably keep in line those that would disregard the stay out warnings if no else was around. Yet one exuberant dog that is let loose can wreak havoc with the nests. This happens because most dog owners think their dog won’t be much trouble. Human nature is just that way, I guess.

They do have some programs at the park about things like breeding birds. I think next spring I will try to get to Horseneck State Beach and hear more about what goes on with their nests and how they use the beach.
