From Hobby to Business

Moving out of the city to a small town was a big change for me. My husband is a medical practitioner and was offered a job to head a department in a hospital somewhere in Oregon. I was hesitant about moving to a small town coming from a big city, but my husband assured me that I would love it there. Being a supportive wife I agreed to relocate and after a couple of weeks of getting introduced and meeting other people, I finally started settling down in our new home. With my husband busy at the hospital, I found I had too much time alone and wanted to get something to sink my teeth in and keep me occupied.

Having made friends with some of the wives at the hospital, they suggested that I should try to look for a hobby to pass away time. One suggested that I should try gardening, which most of the housewives do here in town. Most of them had flower gardens and mostly grew the same kind of flowers. Taking up my friend’s suggestion, I decided to give gardening a try, but instead of flowers I wanted to try planting vegetables instead. I wanted to grow my own vegetable garden since I figured that I could use the produce at home.

I started out with planting tomatoes which did pretty well and seeing as how much I enjoyed working in my vegetable garden, I decided to expand and plant other vegetables as well. Now planting vegetables has not only become a hobby and a way to past my time, instead it developed into a small business. I now have a half acre vegetable garden and am employing a couple of people to help me tend my garden. I still do most of the planting since I simply enjoy doing it, and leave the other chores to my help. Now I can mix pleasure with business.
