First, you want to find a wide flat open space to work. A table top or countertop is ideal. Next, you need to cut your chalkboard contact paper into the size of placemats you want.   After you have all of the chalkboard contact paper cut out, you need to cut the fabric the same size for the backing on the placemat. Now your contact paper should have a sticky side with a protective cover you can pull off. You need to pull it off and stick your fabric to it. It may be easier to stitch the contact paper to the fabric first then cut out the fabric around the contact paper. Now I would recommend sewing once around the edge of the entire placemat, just in case the fabric and contact paper ever decide to separate. This will help hold them together (obviously). Next you’re going to take your binding and line the edges with it. You need to fold it in half around the outer edge of the placemat. Making sure it is straight, use your sewing pins to hold the binding to the placemat. I would recommend sewing around the edge of the binding twice. This will secure the binding to the placemat and finish off the project. Pull the pins out of the binding and save for the nest project. Repeat steps for all the placemats. You can mix and match colors to separate kids from adults, or to use for different holidays or other fun occasions. Before you start use, use the side of your chalk and wipe on the entire chalkboard side of the placemat. Then wipe it off with a dry paper towel. This is a way of seasoning or breaking it in. I recommend doing this after every wash.
