Dry Flies for Trout

Posted by in -The Great Outdoors, Sports and Games

Many trout fisherman will swear by the use of dry flies, not only because of how effective they can be, but also due to how easy it is to indicate a strike. Dry flies are any type of fishing fly that rides on the surface of the water. When fly fishing for trout, these flies are often patterned after breeding aquatic or terrestrial insects. Larger trout especially like to make snacks out of large grasshoppers and crickets, which are represented by a number of great fly patterns.

Using dry flies can be a bit tricky however, as wary trout will ignore a fly that floats unnaturally, or if they can see the leader. Try sinking your leader tip with commercial leader sink, or sticky mud if you can find it. Also, like nymphing, a drag free drift is a must. All of these are great trout fishing tips.
