Do Saltless Water Softeners Produce Safe Water?

As we all know, hard water causes many problems to our household facilities if we leave them running in the pipes. The ultimate problem hard water brings is clogging. Hard water contains hard calcium and magnesium ions which are quite pesky in nature. They will react with with the materials in our water pipes to form a precipitate, which is also known as scale. Scale is a particle that gets left behind on the interior of the pipes which builds up on top of each other. As the layer of scale become thicker over time, it restricts the water flow and causes our pipes to become clogged.

There are two ways to soften the hard water. One way is to use a standard water softener which uses salt to replace the hard ions. The other way is to use saltless water softeners which do not cause a chemical change in the hard water by introducing salt.Instead, it causes a physical change in the hard water. The underlying question for saltless water softeners is, whether is this method safe, since the hard ions are still present in the water.

In order to answer the question, we need to understand how does saltless water softeners cause a physical change. There is a reaction system in the water softeners which produces electric ions. When the hard water enters the saltless water softeners, the electric ions react with the hard ions, which are the magnesium and calcium ions. These electric ions create an attraction between the calcium and magnesium ions and cause them to be attracted to each other. In this way, they will not react with other elements and lose their hard properties.

This type of water softening process is actually very safe as there are no addition of chemicals into the water. The water remains safe to consume and to be used for other purposes as all the essential minerals are still present in the water. Hence, you need not to worry about any side effects that saltless water softeners might bring to the softened water.
