Do I Need To Do Leash Training?

There are dog owners that might consider it unnecessary to leash train their dog. In order to determine under which circumstances this statement may very well be true, let’s take a closer look at what leash training is. As the term suggest, leash train is teaching your dog to walk with a leash on. The uninitiated might argue that no training is required – you simply clip the leash onto the dog’s collar and walk. The dog has not option but to follow.
When you attach a leash to your puppy for the first time, you will find that they hate the idea and at first will pull like crazy in order to get rid of the restraint that the leash represents. Only once the puppy realizes that resistance is futile and that the leash does not present a threat will they calm down. If you have a small breed dog, you can easily control him with the lease and literary drag him to come with you. If you however plan to go for regular walks with your dog, no matter how small, leash training will actually enable you to make the walk enjoyable for both you and your dog.
Walking a dog that is not leashed trained can actually not be called a walk. It is more a situation of pulling, be pulled, unwrap the leash from your legs and stumbling along. Anybody that has experienced this will have to agree that this mode of movement is not fun at all. The only time that leash training is not required is if your dog is so small that you can pick him up and take him where you want, and you don’t plan on going for walks.
For medium breeds, even if you don’t plan on taking your dog for walks, I would still consider leash training essential. There will be visits to the vet, and circumstances might occasionally require that you take your dog somewhere. Leash training would make this so much easier and besides, leash training per se is an activity that can be enjoyed by both owner and dog. It also helps in building the relationship and reinforces general obedience training.
With large breeds leash training is absolutely essential. A large dog will drag you and pull you off your feet if not properly leash trained. An additional benefit that I have experienced from leash training with large breeds (in my case Rottweilers) is that when walking around the house with the dog even without a lease, they will also let me or any other family member go through narrow spaces such as a door first. There is no such thing as them charging past unexpectedly and accidentally knocking you off of your feet.
