Decorating a Gas Fireplace

Posted by in -Home Improvement

Once your gas fireplace has been installed and is ready for operation, one of the most enjoyable aspects concerning this feature of your home still remains: Decorating a fireplace is the opportunity to bring your personal style and touch into the whole arrangement. Remake the surroundings or display personal objects – anything is possible. Prices -e.g. for a gas fireplace insert- are constantly moving lower, leaving more of your budget for decorative purposes.

But what is different about decorating a gas fireplace compared to a traditional wood-burning one? Mainly, the greater design variety and flexibility of gas fireplaces gives you an even greater choice for finding your perfect personal solution.

First, your options depend on whether your gas fireplace has a mantel or not. Some of them, especially wall-mounted products do not provide any space for putting decorative objects like artwork, vases, sculptures, candles or paintings. If no such space is available, it could be helpful to mount matching wooden or metal boards on the wall near the fireplace or -if possible- to attach these items directly to the wall.

But even in this case, decoration options are not limited to the mantel itself. All the elements described above can be put directly on the floor near the fireplace if their size is big enough to harmonize with the dimensions of the fireplace opening itself. Many gas fireplaces feature a decidedly more modern design compared with traditional fireplaces – in this case, the decorations should also be sleek and simple. One specific advice: most of the time, you should stay away from fireplace tools for wooden fireplaces. Putting these useless items (for gas fireplaces) near your hearth creates a fake atmosphere that is usually very unconvincing, especially if you own a ventless gas fireplace.

Finally, there are decoration options for the whole room where the fireplace is located. Rearrange the furniture, move chairs near the fireplace for talks and relaxation and choose colors in the surroundings of the fireplace that match well with its appearance and the warm, yellow flames. Painting the walls or even the mantel itself is another option.

In summary, decorating a gas fireplace is very much like decorating a traditional wood-burning fireplace, but with many more options and flexibility due to the large variety of available designs and models.
