Cubic Zirconia

Cubic zirconia is a synthesized gem that very closely resembles a diamond. It is almost as hard as a diamond and looks a lot like a diamond as far as its brilliance and shine. In fact, many people wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a diamond and a similarly shaped cubic zirconia. Arriving on the scene in 1976, it remains one of the main competitors for diamonds.
Originally its development was pursued because scientists wanted to find an alternative, hard material suitable to use in replacement of the much more expensive diamonds, such as to use with lasers, or drilling. Soviet scientists finally made a breakthrough with this in 1973, and by 1976 the cubic zirconia was produced commercially.
Today the cubic zirconia is used in replacement of diamonds in jewelry. It has meant that jewelry, such as the diamond tennis bracelet, that was formerly unaffordable to many women worldwide, can now be bought and worn.
Most commonly you find it as a clear stone, one which closely resembles diamonds, however it is also possible to find colored cubic zirconias, thus a variety of gems can be imitated by this very versatile gem.
