Crime in a Growing Town

Posted by in -Home Improvement

My husband and I own a hardware shop here in town. We’ve been running it for almost fifteen years now, and although it’s not a money making machine, it has kept us out of trouble all that time, and made us enough money to pay off our mortgage and send our kids to college.

It was a small town when we first moved here, but we’ve steadily watched it getting larger and larger over the years. As with the growth of any town, there is a certain amount of crime that comes with it, and my husband and I got our first taste of this last weekend. Jack was at the counter of the shop when a guy came in with a stocking over his head and demanded all our money, waving a knife around in front of him. Jack, being the stubborn old mule that he is, reached behind him and grabbed a bunch of shower curtain rods off the shelf and proceeded to chase the guys out for the shop while smacking him on his bum as he went.

It was the funniest thing I have ever seen, but tempered with the sadness of knowing that this is only the beginning, and our next visitor may bring something more dangerous than a knife, something that a handful of curtain rods will be no match for.
