Choosing Fireplace Mantels Based On Home Decor
Posted by GuestPoster in -Home Improvement
Fireplace mantels provide an easy way to give a room a new look. Since there are a variety of materials and designs available, unlimited styles exist for contemporary, traditional or even rustic décor. Some homeowners choose to look at local shops or online to find antique fireplace mantels that they can refurbish or use just as they are to give the room an old-fashioned feel. The homeowner should consider several ideas before making the final choice since a fireplace is a focal point and greatly affects the ambiance of the room and the adjacent areas.
First, the choice of material used is of great significance. Traditional mantels are solid wood. The benefit to using wood is that it is multifunctional. The wood could have intricate carvings, rich stains covered with varnish or nothing but a coat of polyurethane. For example, classical styles feature carvings of coats of arms or floral patterns such as fleur-de-lis on rich cherry or mahogany wood. Art deco fireplace mantels may be painted in bright colors to enliven the room. Rustic cabins or country homes often use knotty pine wood that is bare except for a clear coat of protective polyurethane. Other options for materials include granite, metal and brick or stone.
The homeowner will also need to choose the size and shape of the mantel. Some fireplaces may feature a simple slab look as was previously mentioned. Many consumers prefer to install an entire surrounding encasement. The products generally used for this purpose include stone, iron or some other type of metal or brick.
These are the most basic choices that are necessary to make when redesigning or installing a new fireplace. Of course, other considerations exist such as the length and height of the shelf. Fireplace mantels can drastically change the look of a room and various options can create a variety of looks such as a cozy, vibrant or classical room.
