Catching Ghosts on Tape

How often have you gone to a site like YouTube or Yahoo to see ghosts caught on tape? Dozens of videos have those exact words in their titles, and about ninety-nine percent of them aren’t real. They might be the results of clever video editing, some bored people filming one another running around wearing bed sheets, people who “caught” everyday terrestrial things like lens flares, or – if you’re really lucky – you might get Rick-rolled. It’s annoying, isn’t it? Is it truly asking so much to see some real footage of spirits frolicking about a cemetery?

The people who think they caught actual ghosts on camera deserve some forgiveness, though; sometimes it’s difficult to tell what’s physical and what’s spiritual. Often times, people will get a shot of magnified dust specks and think they are orbs, or a strand of hair blows right over the camera lens, producing an ectoplasm effect. Motion blurs as someone briskly walks through the background of a photo in progress can look mighty ghostly. If you have glaucoma and don’t know it yet, you might think you’re seeing an apparition…if the spots in your field of vision don’t show up on camera, go see a doctor before you go blind. In terms of EVP, electronic interference from radios, televisions, and cell phones can create false results.

The reality is that it’s very difficult to actually capture a real ghost on tape. Very spiritually active areas like cemeteries and abandoned hospitals are often either off-limits to the public or closed after dark…and night time is when spirits are most likely to be out. Not to mention that if you actually see a ghost (or think you see one), you’ll most likely run screaming from the area before recording anything. And then when you tell people about your experience with no proof, they’ll tell you to stop drinking.

Ghosts cannot kill you, but because they are creatures we, in general, do not wholly understand, we are scared of them. Society tells us that we should fear that which we do not know, and ghosts are presumed terrifying because we’re made to believe death is terrifying…a ghost is the proof of someone’s death. See where I’m going with this? Between the fear of the unknown, the lack of haunted locations available, and the physical things that can resemble spirit activity, it can sometimes be difficult to capture a ghost on film if you’re not a seasoned ghost hunter.
