The lowly casserole dish is a versatile kitchen workhorse. Beyond using it to make it’s namesake recipe, the casserole, a casserole dish can be used in any other oven-based recipe. The sturdy construction and high rim make it perfect for high heat situations like an oven. Depending on the material it can also be microwave safe making it good for steaming vegetables, heating up leftovers, and boiling water even. Some of the more popular materials are glass, ceramic, and Pyrex. Pyrex is a special glass-type material suitable for very high heat applications and it’s also crack and shatter resistant. If you do purchase Pyrex casserole dishes, know that you are purchasing a dish that will last for years and years. So the next time you reach for a dish, use a casserole dish!
