A carpet shampooer comes in all brands and models, but basically they all work the same way – by discharging a cleaning solution on to the carpet and working that cleaner deep into the carpet through the action of a rotating brush. This serves to loosen dirt particles trapped in the carpet and bring them to the surface, where the machine suctions them into a collection tank, along with the spent cleaning fluid itself. When the collection tank is filled, it needs to be emptied before cleaning can be resumed, so its best to find a unit with larger, as opposed to smaller, containers. The best carpet shampooer will also have the ability to blow hot air over the surface of the carpet as it cleans, so that drying takes place almost immediately.
