Can Bedroom Furniture Be Eco-friendly?

Usually people will consider things such as price, looks, comfort and how strong furniture is when they are thinking about buying it. However, more and more people are raising concerns about how the production of wood furniture is depleting our planet’s natural products.

Of course, fuel and energy depletion is a common concern amongst those who are worried about our environment. There are other issues to consider, however, including the buyer’s decisions when it comes to buying furniture that contains certain harmful chemicals.

Although it may not appear to be a problem, the truth is that making and buying wood furniture really does have an impact on our ecological well-being. The wood for furniture is often obtained from non managed forests, thus resulting in huge areas where deforestation is severely affecting the ecosystem. That is not even mentioning the problems that arise when the wood is transported from the forests to the factories or shops.

Each time you buy a piece of wooden furniture you are potentially impacting the environment by your choices. With this in mind, many are now buying furniture only made from wood that has been grown in eco-managed forests.

Even in the production of furniture, concerns have been raised regarding the toxicity of certain products that are used. For example, glues, paints and other finishes are also somewhat toxic and better avoided when possible. These products can promote allergies in people and should be avoided whenever possible.

You will also want to take into consideration the type of wood used in making the furniture. There is no comparison when it comes to strength and durability between solid wood and pressed wood products. Another type of furniture material that is very ecological is rattan and natural wicker. You can find wicker bedroom furniture in any color you want.

Realizing that these concerns are valid, many manufacturers these days are doing what they can to help the environment. There are many beautiful rustic, ecologically designed beds and bedroom furniture available. Paint that is water based and non toxic is available and being used by manufacturers, even vanishes and lacquer can be found which are not toxic.

This might mean that you cannot settle for cheap white bedroom furniture and that may have to pay a little more for eco-friendly products, but the results for an improved environment, and a safer sleeping area for our children, are certainly worth a little more.
