Bioidentical Hormone Therapy

Posted by in Health & Fitness

There are a few different forms of bioidentical hormone therapies available, some are medications approved by the FDA and some are not approved by the FDA but are still available. These unapproved bioidentical hormone medications are prepared at compounding pharmacies and are a source of some controversy. Since the compounded ingredients are mixed to each woman’s needs, the results are not the same every time which means they are not standardized so they can not be formally approved by the FDA.

There are pros and cons to the whole compounding process. Compounding allows doctors to prescribe an exact match to each woman’s specific case and it also allows women with allergies to get a usable medication which they may not otherwise be able to purchase in a traditional way. Of course the downside is an increased potential for human error and no traditional FDA warning concerning the potential risks of the medication. When it comes to making choices about how to treat your menopausal symptoms, always consult with a doctor.
